Glasgow Citybus

Glasgow Citybus is a privately-owned business, formed in November 1999.

Our bus services are intended to make a positive contribution to the bus network, and we try to avoid operating on routes which are already adequately and properly served by other bus operators.

Consequently, our services tend to be the less lucrative ones, and therefore the profit potential is limited. There are, however, no shareholders applying a continual pressure for profits. The margin of revenue in excess of operating cost is used for the development of the business.

The Services

The bus services operated are unique to ourselves, and we are steadily developing the customer base.

A brief, and rather simplified, history of the services currently operating is:

November 1999Start of service 17 Duntocher - Glasgow, Mondays to Saturdays.
April 2000Start of service 84 Old Kilpatrick - Clydebank, Mondays to Saturdays.
January 2002Service 84 extended to Gartnavel Hospital via Knightswood.
October 2002Start of service 83 Blairdardie - Clydebank, Mondays to Saturdays.
August 2003Sunday operations started on service 17.
September 2004Service 84 extended to Partick via Hyndland.
August 2005Service 83 revised to operate between Drumchapel and Gartnavel Hospital.
August 2007Start of service 16 Baljaffray - Glasgow. Service 83 extended from Gartnavel Hospital to Partick, and service 84 curtailed at Gartnavel Hospital.
April 2008Start of service 82 Maryhill - Gartnavel Hospital, Mondays to Saturdays.

The Vehicles

The fleet is of a varied age range, although there are only a small number of types in order to maintain acceptable standardisation. The big buses are DAF (now VDL Bus), the small buses are Mercedes, and the medium sized buses are Dennis.

Whilst some of the buses are elderly, we do not hide the ages by the use of personal or cherished number plates. Any vehicle on the fleet with such plates has been registered as such by a previous owner. We would never be embarrassed by the age of a bus, only by it’s condition!

The vehicle policy is to continue the introduction of low floor easy access buses. The Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations 2000 require all buses on our roads to be compatible with their specifications by certain dates. At Glasgow Citybus we intend to be able to bring our fleet into line with these requirements within the time scale determined by the regulations.

The primary use of this web site is for access to information on the bus services. For those interested in the vehicles, we have taken the opportunity to put together some other pages which list the fleet. There is a “Contact Us” section, should you need further information, or otherwise have a comment to make.

I hope you enjoy your visit.
